課程概述

This course will lead students to read interesting Medieval literary works while sampling various recent approaches to Medieval literature and culture. Students can sample different approaches and delve into one more fully in a paper. Texts to be read may include: Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia regum Britanniae, Layamon's Brut, Chretien de Troyes' Yvain, the Knight of the Lion, The Romance of Sir Beves of Hamtoun, Geoffrey Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde and Squire's Tale, The Book of Margery Kempe, John Lydgate's Troy Book, and Robert Henryson's Testament of Cressida. The topics of critical debates may include: post-colonial medieval historiography, medieval nationalism, medieval creatures and animals, the medieval Orient, gender, sexuality, women, and Troy.

This seminar is designed as an intensive and interactive workshop. Students will do class presentations on literary texts and critical essays. After each unit is discussed, students will need to hand in a 2-page short response (4 responses out of five units in this semester). A 250-word proposal will be due on May 29th, and the final paper will be due on June 21st. A mini conference in which students will present their work will be held on June 12th.

Although some of the texts examined in the course will be in Middle English, no previous familiarity with the language is expected or required. At the end of each class, we may get together informally (as the “Song School”) to practice Middle English. 

課程目標
 This graduate seminar aims to explore Medieval literary texts while investigating significant critical approaches to Medieval studies. The main goal is to provide students with basic, necessary knowledge and skills to read, analyze, and interpret literary works from the eleventh to the fifteenth centuries. While examining literary works and situating them properly in historical contexts, we will also read notable articles from Medieval literary studies. At the end of the course, students will be able to:
1. Approach medieval literary works historically, textually, and critically.
2. Understand key issues and debates in Medieval literary studies.
3. Understand and read aloud Middle English.
 
課程要求
 1. Regular attendance and active participation are required.
2. Presentations on the texts and critical essays.
3. Four critical responses (2 pages).
4. Final paper in draft and final form (12-15 pages).
